Portion guide

Cakes come in all shapes and sizes, so the easiest way to start, is to think about how many people you'd like to serve.
All the portions here are for sponge cakes.

How many guests will there be?

If you are throwing a large party or a wedding, a good rule-of-thumb is to cater for 75% of your guests, on the assumption that not everyone will want a slice of cake. Although, it is entirely up to you.  We are more than happy to make whatever sized cake you'd like!

Any left-over cake can always be wrapped and stored in an airtight container for up to 7 days or it can be wrapped and frozen. Cupcakes will be at their best for around 3 days, stored in an airtight container and can also be frozen.

If you need more portions, we can always provide extra cutting cakes or cupcakes.  These would be simmply iced in a style to match the main cake and can be a good way to provide for guests with allergies and itolerances.
Tall tiers can add up to 50% more portions and fruit cakes will serve double the portion sizes in the diagrams.
If you choose a fruit cake as one of the flavours, this should always be the lowest tier due to the weight.

Smallest cakes

The smallest single tier wedding cakes we make are 8" round cakes.  They will cut into 24 portions, based on a the size of a slice being  1" x 2" x height of the cake (which is usuall around 4").  But in our shop, we cut an 8" round cake into 12-14 portions as we like to give you a nice big slice.

It really depends on how you are serving the cake.  If it's as a dessert, then you will larger portions and if it's in addition to dessert, then wedding cake sized portions will be more suitable.  For a childrens' party you can often get more than 24 potions, just cut them a little smaller!

With the exception of the standard birthday cakes, we stick to 8" cakes as the smallest ordered cakes we make,  as the majority of the cost of your cake comes form the time and effort put into it, not so much the cost of the ingredients.  So whilst a smaller cake costs slightly less for us to make, it will still take a similar amount of time and effort as a larger one, and we'd end up charging you not much less for a 6" as we would for an 8".  As all our cakes are freshly made, you have a good 7 days to eat it all and if you really don't think you can manage it in that time, you can wrap it and freeze it.

Cutting your cake

To get the maximum slices from a cake we always reccomend cutting the cake into a grid, rather than triangular pieces cut out from the centre like we would in our shop. Start by cutting 1" (2.5cm) slices and the divide those slices up into 2" (5cm) portions. This works with round, square or irregular shapes.
